Premarital Evaluation

Premarital Inventory – FOCCUS is an instrument used to discover areas of agreement, areas of disagreement and areas that the couple simply hasn't given much thought. The couple will discuss the survey results together, usually assisted by the parish priest or deacon. If this is not available at your parish, please call Catholic Charities at (812) 423-5456 to set up an appointment.

Who should use FOCCUS and why?
FOCCUS was designed for couples preparing for marriage or seriously considering marriage. It provides them with a personalized profile of their relationship, its strengths and challenges. Many couples state, “It helped us to talk about what we didn’t know we needed to talk about.”

Is this a test to see if we should get married?
No. FOCCUS is designed to work with engaged couples and guide them to work on key areas of their relationship. It is both a starting place for discussion and a map of what issues need time and attention, affirmation or problem solving.

Are special issues or situations addressed in the inventory?
Yes. FOCCUS has 156 basic questions for all couples. There are additionally three groups – Interfaith, Remarriage and Cohabitating couples – who have additional questions for discussion.

What if we are already married and wish to do this inventory?
REFOCCUS is a self-scored tool that couples can take by themselves without a facilitator. Married couples can take REFOCCUS at different times in their lives and come out with very different results, depending on what has gone on in their marriage. It is a growth and enrichment tool for couples and offers 5 categories. This is not recommended for troubled marriages.
